Xbox officially announces its 'disc to digital' program

Xbox officially confirmed its "disc to digital" program, letting owners of physical Xbox One or Xbox Series X games claim the digital entitlement for the same title.

How it works

Insert a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launch the game. Once you claim the digital entitlement, the disc keeps working exactly as it always has, but you also unlock digital-only perks: Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming, where supported for that title.

Which games qualify

Microsoft said "most" Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc games will be supported. The program launches with thousands of titles, though not every game will be available on day one — more will be added over time.

Availability

Xbox Insiders got first access starting August 31, 2026. Xbox hasn't confirmed how long the feature stays Insiders-only before rolling out to everyone.

Microsoft framed the announcement as part of its broader commitment to game preservation.
