Which SSD upgrade actually matters for load times in 2026

Moving from a hard drive to any SSD is the upgrade that matters. Moving from one NVMe SSD to a faster one almost never shows up in game load times, even when the speed rating on the box is much higher.
The sequential speed numbers SSD makers advertise (7,000, 10,000, 14,000 MB/s) climb every generation, but game load times don't drop in the same proportion. The reason: those numbers measure a scenario — transferring one huge, continuous file — that almost no game reproduces when it's loading a save.
The jump that actually shows up
Going from a mechanical hard drive to any SSD (SATA or NVMe) is the real, measurable difference: dropping from a 40-60 second load screen to 5-10 seconds. There, it barely matters which specific SSD you pick — the generational jump does the work, not the brand or the exact model.
The jump that almost never shows up
Going from one NVMe SSD to a faster one (say, from a PCIe 3.0 drive to a PCIe 5.0 drive rated two or three times faster) rarely cuts load time by anything you'd notice. Games load thousands of small, scattered files, not one continuous stream — the bottleneck there is usually the CPU processing that data, the game engine's own design, or access latency, more than the drive's peak bandwidth.
There are narrow exceptions: a handful of games built specifically around very fast data streaming (some next-gen console exclusives, ported with that architecture in mind) can notice the gap between a fast and a slow NVMe drive. They're the exception, not the rule.
What to actually look at when buying an SSD for gaming
- Capacity before speed. Running out of space and constantly uninstalling games hurts your experience far more than any difference in drive speed.
- NVMe over SATA, once. That jump does show up in general system feel (boot time, install speed), even if it doesn't specifically show up in game load screens.
- Don't pay extra for the highest number on the box. A mid-range NVMe drive today already covers what a game can actually use; the price premium for the top speed rating rarely translates into anything you'll notice while playing.
The short version
If you're still running games off a mechanical hard drive, that's the upgrade worth making. If you already have an NVMe SSD and are wondering whether to upgrade to a "faster" one purely for load times, that money does more somewhere else in the build.
