DLSS vs. FSR vs. XeSS: what to turn on for your GPU

Quick answer

On an RTX card, use DLSS. On an AMD card or an older GTX, use FSR. On an Intel Arc, use XeSS in its XMX mode.

All three acronyms solve the same problem — render at a lower internal resolution and reconstruct the rest in software to gain frames — but they are not the same technology, and turning on the wrong one for your hardware leaves either performance or image quality on the table.

DLSS (NVIDIA)

Exclusive to RTX cards. It uses the GPU's tensor cores to reconstruct the image with a model NVIDIA trains itself, which in practice gives it better reconstruction quality than its competitors in most comparisons, especially in motion and in fine detail like foliage or cables. As of 2026, with the 616.64 Game Ready driver, NVIDIA added DLSS 5 with 3D-guided neural rendering — for now limited to the RTX 50 series and to games that implement it explicitly, not an automatic upgrade for everything older.

If you own any generation of RTX card, there's no reason to reach for anything else: it's the best quality-per-performance option available for your hardware.

FSR (AMD)

Open and cross-platform: it runs on AMD cards, but also on NVIDIA GPUs and even integrated graphics, because it doesn't depend on dedicated AI hardware. That openness is both its strength and its ceiling — without vendor-specific acceleration, it tends to trail DLSS on sharpness when both are available in the same game, especially at the more aggressive upscaling presets.

It's the default choice if you have an AMD card, an NVIDIA GTX card (no tensor cores), or any GPU that supports neither DLSS nor XeSS.

XeSS (Intel)

It takes two genuinely different paths depending on your hardware, which is the part most people miss: on an Intel Arc card it runs in XMX mode, using dedicated matrix acceleration, with quality comparable to DLSS. On any other card (NVIDIA, AMD) it automatically falls back to DP4a mode, which lands closer to FSR in result.

If you have an Arc card, use XeSS in XMX mode — it's built for that hardware. On any other GPU brand, XeSS's DP4a mode rarely beats FSR or DLSS already tuned for that card, so there's no reason to prefer it over your vendor's native option.

The quality preset matters as much as the technology

Within each one, the preset (Quality, Balanced, Performance) changes how much internal resolution gets reconstructed. At 1440p or below, stay on Quality — the frame headroom Performance mode buys usually isn't worth the sharpness it costs. At 4K, with more base pixels to work from, Balanced or even Performance tends to look good because there's more source information to reconstruct from.
